A proposal by the Federal Communications Commission will bring new spectrum to aircrafts and better Wifi. A 14.0-14.5 GHz spectrum will add up to 300 gigabits per second to aircrafts using Wifi. While the individual user might only see a small amount of that, it does bump up wifi to the “Coffee house” experience.
FCC chaiman Julius Genachowski feels by adding this spectrum it will bring more people to continue their Internet habits on the plane and pull out their mobile devices. The FCC voted unanimously to move forward with this plan.
Companies like Gogo wireless will still be controlling in-flight Wifi and you will (for now) still have to pay a fee as you go.
